- Andy, the CDROM specification allows for about 640 meg of data (150KB per
- "second", 60 seconds per "minute", and 72 minutes per CD). In reality, some of
- the drives have had a problem with wobble in the outer section of the disk, so
- 540 meg is safe. The interfas are either custom or SCSI (I wont even start to
- take about "standardized" SCSI connectors or interface boards), which will also
- work with a lot of the WORM dirves. In fact, for reading, if you choose a WORM
- drive with 2K blocks, it can appear as a CDROM drive (of cou with more
- capacity). Writing on a WORM drive is a little bit different. You can inquire
- the drive to find out its capacity and drive/sector size, but the drive
- manufacturers differ greately in how they handle automatic relocation of bad
- sectors. Performance is also another factor that differs with each vendor. If
- you're sold on a CD distribution media, you might consider CD-PROM. I saw a
- prototype in Amsterdam in November '86, and I dont know status, but it's
- supposed to be a WORM that is readable b players. I hope all of this rambling
- helps......Pete

- Andy, sorry about the typos in my first reply. I guess that backspace doesnt
- work like I thought it should on long lines. The part I didn't address is
- capacity. The MAXTOR 5 1/4" will hold 400Mb per side. The TOSHIBA is 1.8Gb per
- side, Optimem is currently 1Gb per side going to 2.5Gb per side, and Sony is
- around 2Gb per side. Some of the manufacturers also offer a juke box for
- automatic selection/loading of platters. Cygnet is one company that produces
- one.....Pete

- Dear John,
-
- Is your interest proferssional, academic, or late night when everybody's gone
- to bed? We are licensing a search engine for Hypercard which makes searching
- large scale datbases reasonable under Hypercard.

- Does anyone know what, if any, plans MICROSOFT has for issuing a revision of
- BOOKSHELF? The manual says that it plans to issue revisions from time to time.
-
- Secondly, does GROLIER have any plans to update it encyclopedia?

- It Helps Pete, thanks for the input. At this point, im still open for
- sugesstions on what the best media would be. My goal is to find a fast way of
- storing data in the 3-5 gigabyte range without operator interaction.

- Iv heard about the jute box system. I have some info on a SONY jutebox that
- works with 12" disks (3.5 gig each), the largest Jutebox they offer holds
- around 820 gig. But its still VERY expensive. Once again, thanks for the
- input.

- I guess my interest is professional, academic AND late night when everybody's
- gone to bed. I am in the very (very) early stages of product development of a
- HyperCard based application for the professional online searcher and
- information consultant. I can see the product being of sufficient size (in one
- permutation, at least) to require consideration of CD-ROM. I am also
- interested in my role as a freelance writer about things computer. And I'm
- curious because I'm personally very excited about both HyperCard and CD-ROM,
- especially when they combine to work together. So, tell me more about your
- search engine and about XIPHIAS. If you have some things you can mail, my land
- address is:

- 314 MacArthur Commons
- Irving TX 75062
-
- Information via EMail is also good. Thanks for your response. I'm eager to
- hear more about what you're doing.
